Stallholders at Fugalei Market have expressed support for the market’s new 24-hour operation, saying it will bring more opportunities and benefits to vendors and customers. 

The Accident Compensation Corporation announced on Tuesday that the Fugalei Market will be open around the clock starting Thursday,  19 February.

Vendor Sieni Apoufasa said stalls at Fugalei Market are rented at $6 a day. 

"Many of them are happy with the 24-hour operation. Most stalls close at 10 pm, but some stay open later into the night. The only concern is that if it operates 24 hours, there should be a small adjustment to the rent," she said.

"If it opens 24 hours, it would be good to make a small change in the rent around 6–7 pm, because at that time there are no customers, while during the day there are people to serve and some rest from outside comes in."

Lisi Ioane from Falelauniu, also a stallholder, commented, "There is a benefit for those who spend the night at the market; they will get more income. Mostly, people are happy that Fugalei Market will be open 24 hours."

Vaifale Alaovaetu’u added, "It is good for people who stay in the outer villages because they can rest at the market. This arrangement is good for us and for those from outer villages who don’t have vehicles; they can come and sleep at the market. 

"I am thankful to the government and the Prime Minister, because at night there is no noise. It is peaceful at night, and people can rest well. The calm at night is very nice and healthy, and there is no disturbance."

Vendors say the 24-hour schedule could help them earn more, particularly from customers who come from outer villages and from late-night or early-morning traffic. The extended hours are expected to support the livelihoods of stallholders and the convenience of shoppers.

The government and market management emphasised that proper adjustments to rent and operations will ensure that vendors continue to benefit while maintaining a safe and organised environment for the market at all hours.
