$6 minimum wage, pay rise for civil servants
The cabinet agreed to review and start consultations about increasing the minimum wage to $6 per hour and announcing a pay rise for all civil servants.
Prime Minister La'aulialemalietoa Leuatea Schmidt announced that the cabinet had not only considered a pay rise for all government employees, but they also passed a review and consultations on a new minimum wage for Samoa.
La'aulialemalietoa said all government employees, no matter what work they do, will all get a pay rise as promised by the Fa'atuatua i le Atua Samoa ua Tasi Party when they prepared for the election last year.
The Prime Minister said their other promise was a minimum wage increase, which the cabinet reviewed and considered $6 per hour.
La'aulialemalietoa said the okay from cabinet was given for consultations and review because they want to hear from the private sector.
"There are areas in which the government is looking at, like the private sector and the consequences of having another increase on minimum wage," La'aulialemalietoa said.
As of July 1, 2024, the minimum wage in Samoa was $4 per hour for both public and private sector employees. This rate increased from $3.00. In July 2025, this went up to $4.84 per hour, as part of a scheduled increase.
