Concerned Vaimoso resident wants answers
Vaimoso resident Ken Lameta lives behind the Methodist Church and is still waiting for answers from the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment about the rubbish that has been carried by the river into their village, blocking the river's way.
People believe this is leading to a bigger problem.
Lameta has reached out to the MNRE with the hopes that their concerns will be dealt with as soon as possible. According to Lameta, he has been calling them for about six years now, with the same response from them, saying they are working on it.
"I called the MNRE first, but I was told that this was the LTA's (Land Transport Authority) responsibility. I told them that my concern was the river, not the road, which was when this tree just fell. So I called LTA and they came and saw it," Lameta said.
"A person who came said, 'Ken, you already know this isn't our job'. I was advised to call DMO, so I did, but the machine said 'the number you have dialled is suspended'. But once I got hold of them, LTA, DMO and MNRE. They came and took photos of the fallen tree, but it wasn't raining at the time.
"The person from MNRE's name was Taito, he told me that this was their responsibility, and I shouldn't worry. Then moved on to the same excuses that they will work on it. Up until this day, nothing. Our concern is that the water flow might rise again, and it will impact the homes in their areas. There are also health concerns that come with this."
Lameta has been has been following up on this issue for five years, but he hasn't received any response from anyone. With the outbreak of dengue fever, he fears that this may spread dengue within their community.
He also mentioned that the village could have done the cleaning, but they do not have the resources to clear the whole dump. The water flow can happen anytime, it doesn't only happen during bad weather, it can also happen during a fine sunny day.
According to Lameta, the scene behind his home is the result of the flooding from last Monday. He said the water did not spare any of the homes in his area. He said the water went into their homes.
With all his efforts in contacting the responsible ministries, he always gets the same response. However, there hasn't been any assessment done in the last five years.
