For the first time in Samoa's rugby history, a woman was appointed president of a provincial rugby union. Taulapapa Jaclyn Mariner-Salima takes over the helm of Fa’asaleleaga Provincial Rugby Union.

Her elevation to the role is a powerful reflection of the union’s commitment to progress, inclusivity, and the empowerment of women in spaces traditionally dominated by men.

Taulapapa brings a wealth of experience to her new role, having dedicated over a decade to rugby development—particularly in Savai’i, where she has been instrumental in organizing and supporting local teams. Her hands-on involvement and deep understanding of the game at the grassroots level have earned her the respect and admiration of the rugby community.

“I am deeply humbled and honoured to take on this responsibility,” said Taulapapa. “I am committed to representing and working tirelessly for the betterment of our community. Together, we will continue to build on the rich traditions of Fa’asaleleaga while embracing progress and unity.”

Her appointment has been met with strong support from across the rugby landscape, including from the national governing body. Lakapi Samoa Chief Executive Officer, Seumanu Douglas Ngau Chun, praised the move as a progressive and timely decision.

“Her experience and dedication to the welfare of our rugby community make her an outstanding choice for this position. This is a momentous step forward for Samoa, as we continue building equality and opportunity,” said Seumanu.

As she takes on this pioneering leadership role, Taulapapa’s presidency is expected to usher in a new era for rugby in the Fa’asaleleaga district. Her vision, grounded in unity and innovation, promises to not only strengthen the sport within the region but also inspire more women to pursue leadership positions across all sectors.

The Fa’asaleleaga Provincial Rugby Union is optimistic about the future under her leadership and believes this transformative chapter will help shape a stronger, more inclusive sporting culture in Samoa.
