Traditional food prep part of A’ana 1 College culture week
A’ana 1 College once again upheld its tradition of celebrating Samoa Language and Culture Week and introduced a new and engaging approach, focusing on traditional food preparation (Gasesega) and the cultural customs of serving food (Lufilufiga).
The event is dedicated to honouring the Samoan language and preserving the customs that define the nation’s identity.
Head of the Samoan Department, Susuga Lafitaga Mose, highlighted the significance of the event.
“A very important part of our culture and a tradition of A’ana 1 College is the annual celebration of the Samoan Language and our cultural heritage. However, this year, the event has taken a new approach by focusing on food preparation and traditional food serving. Additionally, all students of the school are required to wear Samoan attire, puletasi for girls, alo’a and ie faitaga for boys,” he said.
The school ensured that all students participated in the cultural activities, allowing them to engage in hands-on learning experiences that deepened their understanding of Samoan traditions. Students had the opportunity to prepare a variety of traditional dishes, including supo esi, vaisalo, vaisu, suamoa, and suai’a. These meals are deeply rooted in Samoan culture, often served during special occasions and community gatherings.
Lafitaga emphasised that the purpose of these activities was to equip students with traditional cooking skills and cultural knowledge. “Various traditional Samoan foods are being prepared, such as supo esi, vaisalo, vaisu, suamoa, suai’a, and others. The significance of this is to teach students how to prepare and serve traditional foods properly,” he stated.
“This event, celebrated on Friday, marks the conclusion of Samoa Language and Culture Week.”
The school’s Headmaster, Mr Pula, also expressed his gratitude to the Ministry of Education, Culture, and Sports (MEC) for supporting this initiative. He acknowledged that the event was not just a celebration but also a valuable learning experience for students.
“I want to thank the MEC for the opportunity to celebrate Samoa Language and Culture Week. Many students have gained new knowledge about Samoan culture, particularly in traditional cooking, the significance of pigs and chickens when served to high-ranking individuals in the village, and the preparation of various Samoan dishes such as supo esi and vaisalo.”
As the Samoa Language and Culture Week came to an end, the students of A’ana 1 College reflected on the valuable lessons they had learned. The event was more than just a school activity, it was a meaningful experience that strengthened their cultural identity and appreciation for their heritage.
