Search for new Manu Samoa coach

The search for a new head coach for the Manu Samoa rugby team is approaching its final stages, with the chairman of Lakapi Samoa, Tuilaepa Sa'ilele Malielegaoi, confirming that interviews will be completed by the end of this week.
In response to inquiries from the Samoa Observer, Tuilaepa revealed that they had received a large number of applications, with several strong candidates vying for the role.
“There are some really good candidates, and it’s going to be a tough decision for the panel,” Tuilaepa said. He added that the Board is now waiting for the final interviews to be conducted and for the panel’s report, which will help determine the most suitable person for the job.
Tuilaepa noted that the candidates include applicants from outside Samoa, with strong contenders from Britain, New Zealand, and Australia.
“The panel is conducting the last round of interviews. The reason for the delay is that there are many qualified candidates, but also some less suitable ones. However, the panel is doing its best to review all applications carefully to ensure we select the right person,” he explained.
The position of Manu Samoa head coach became vacant in January 2025 following the resignation of former coach Mase Mahonri Schwalger.
Mase’s resignation, effective immediately, was accepted by the Lakapi Samoa board.
This came after he was charged by police with multiple sexual offenses, including unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, and indecent assault.
Mase’s suspension by Lakapi Samoa was announced in September 2024, pending a review of his case, which was due in December.
Despite these legal challenges, Mase’s leadership in 2024 saw Manu Samoa achieve notable milestones, including a victory over Italy, a Tier 1 nation, and a strong performance in the Pacific Nations Cup.
Lakapi Samoa expressed gratitude for Mase's contributions to the team and acknowledged his efforts in helping shape the team's journey.
"We appreciate Mase’s service to our country through the Manu Samoa team. His contributions will always be remembered," Tuilaepa said.
With the position still unfilled, the clock is ticking as 2025 is a critical year for the team.
The Pacific Nations Cup, following the June and July international window, will serve as a key qualifier for Manu Samoa’s potential spot in the extended 2027 Rugby World Cup.
