Samoan student Valvita Destorua Leaumoana Lavea was grateful for the opportunity to visit Japan under the JENESYS program. She is a third-year student at the University of the South Pacific, studying law.

"My passion for international relations and diplomacy has always been fueled by a desire to understand and appreciate cultural diversity. When I was selected to participate in the JENESYS Program, I felt humbled and thrilled. I was about to visit Japan, a country whose rich history, commitment to peace, and cultural values deeply resonated with both my academic interests and personal beliefs. The moment I arrived, I kept pinching myself, constantly reminding myself that this incredible experience was real," she said.

"Coming from a Samoan family, where respect for elders and cultural values form the core of daily life, I’ve always been drawn to Japan’s reverence for tradition, family, and community. I soon discovered just how much our cultures align. Japan had always been a dream destination for me, but through the JENESYS Program, I was able to fully immerse myself in its unique culture. One of my favourites was trying various traditional Japanese dishes, which not only broadened my culinary horizons but also deepened my understanding of the cultural significance behind each dish."

The JENESYS Program gave her the chance to meet her Pacific brothers and sisters, further enriching their cultural exchange.

"It was inspiring to connect with participants from different backgrounds and learn about their unique cultures while sharing our own. This exchange of ideas, values, and experiences strengthened our collective bond, reminding me of the importance of unity among island nations. To me, the program wasn’t just about cultural exchange with Japan; it was also about learning from each other and broadening our global perspectives."

One of her most memorable experiences was the homestay with the Kirumitu family, an elderly couple who welcomed her into their home. Their warmth and generosity instantly reminded Valvita of her grandparents.

"Making me feel as though I had found a second family in Japan. As a Samoan daughter, I was raised to care for and respect my elders, and the devotion the Kirumitu family showed us reflected those same values. This experience not only deepened my appreciation for Japanese culture but also strengthened my connection to my heritage and the responsibilities I carry as a Tama’ita’i Samoa. Another highlight of the trip was visiting the Hiroshima Peace Memorial Museum."

"As a law student with a keen interest in international law and peacebuilding, the museum’s sobering message left a profound impression on me. The museum commemorates the devastation of the 1945 atomic bombing, telling the heart-wrenching stories of survivors and serving as a poignant reminder of the horrors of war. This experience was especially significant for my group, as we focused on peacebuilding. Our visit solidified my belief in the importance of international cooperation and diplomacy in preventing such tragedies. I was especially moved by how technology was used in the museum to present the narrative of Hiroshima’s history and its aftermath."

The innovative use of technology to promote peace and educate visitors left her in awe of how progress and tradition could coexist for a higher purpose.

"This experience reinforced my commitment to pursuing a career in diplomacy and international peace. Reflecting on my time in Japan, I am filled with immense gratitude for the JENESYS Program. It wasn’t just an opportunity to visit a new country—it was a chance to engage deeply with Japan’s culture, history, and values while also gaining invaluable insights into international diplomacy and peacebuilding. The lessons I learned, the friendships I formed with fellow participants from across the Pacific, and the kindness I received from the Japanese people will stay with me for a lifetime."

She strongly encourages young adults studying law, history, agriculture, or any other field, or simply those with a passion for cultural exchange, to apply for the JENESYS Program. It is a life-changing opportunity that will broaden your global perspective, expose you to new cultures, and provide you with memories and lessons that will shape your personal and professional journey.
