More than 250 mm rain and 80 km/h winds

Mount Lepu’e recorded the highest rainfall this week of 252 millimeters but it is still a lot less than rainfall collected by Vaipouli last month. Winds up to 80 kilometres per hour also swept through Apia.

The Samoa Meteorology Office said the system’s heavy rainfall was widespread across Samoa with the highest rainfall totals recorded in the central parts of Upolu Island. 

According to the meteorology office on Wednesday, the highest rainfall totals over the past 24 hours were 252mm at Mt. Lepu’e, 206mm at Afiamalu, 171 at Togitogiga, 167mm at Apia, 146 mm at Mulivai Safata and 129 mm at Salani. 

Samoa experienced significant weather-related disruptions over the weekend, including strong winds and flooding caused by convective activity within the active convergence zone. 

Early on Monday morning, 10 March 2025, the cloud band swiftly moved south of Samoa, uprooting trees and causing damage to utility services. 

The strong winds had a substantial impact on Upolu and elevated regions of the central interior and the strongest wind gusts this week was recorded at 74.9km per hour at Apia and 57.2km per hour at Saoluafata. 

Last month the Meteorology Office noted that Vaipouli had the highest rainfall of 296 mm. 

The rainfall resulted in flooding in many areas and also caused landlsides. Meanwhile there were winds up to 80 kilometres per hour recorded.

The weather office said Samoa experienced significant weather-related disruptions over the weekend, including strong winds and localised flooding caused by convective activity within the active convergence zone.

The strong winds impacted Upolu and elevated regions of the central interior. Some of the strongest observed wind gusts in the last 24 hours included 74.9 km/h at Apia and 57.2 km/h at Saoluafata.
