Man jailed for meth
A man was jailed for one year and nine months for possession of meth with the Supreme Court sounding a warning that it will deal harshly with drug offences and stop it from spreading like wildfire.
Supreme Court Judge Justice Leiataualesa Darryl Clarke passed the sentence on Monday.
Larry Fa'amausili, a former Senior Finance Officer at the Electric Power Corporation was told by Justice Clarke that his defence that the police doing their raid at his home in Malie with guns was something he had done to himself and his family.
Justice Leiataualesa during sentencing said the police were doing their job that day and the police knew the risk of doing raids which was why they were using guns.
According to the summary of facts, the police raided Fa'amausili's home in Malie in July last year and found a black bag hidden under a mattress.
Police found 13.18 grams of methamphetamine and 1.08 grams of marijuana. Additionally, utensils were found with a scale in Faamausili's house.
The raid was done at around 5:40 in the morning while Fa'amausili's wife and two daughters were present.
Justice Clarke took into account the written statements from the defendant's two daughters requesting the court for a lesser penalty for their father.
"This breaks my heart and this is a lesson for you and others who are thinking of committing the same offence. The prison is the answer for whoever does it to send out a clear message that this has to stop," Justice Clarke said.
The court took a starting point of three and a half years imprisonment.
Five months were deducted for the defendant being remorseful, another six months were deducted for the village punishment and another four months for the wife and two daughters' pleas for a lesser penalty for their father.
Another six months were deducted for the defendant's guilty plea leaving one year and nine months.
For other charges of utensils and possession of marijuana, the defendant was jailed for three months to be served concurrently.
