Malaki Tito Malupo-Taufao, a young leader from Samoa has been recognised as one of the Top 20 Finalists for the prestigious Commonwealth Youth Awards 2025.

This recognition is a remarkable achievement for the young man from the villages of Vaito'omuli, Palauli, and Salelologa on Savai’i. Malaki, one of four finalists from the Pacific, expressed his gratitude and astonishment upon hearing the news.

"I was truly humbled and at a loss for words when I found out I had been recognised as one of the Top 20 Finalists for the Commonwealth Youth Awards 2025," Malaki shared, reflecting on the honour.

“It’s a proud moment to see the work we do here in Savai’i being recognised on such a global stage.”

Malaki credits his success to his faith and the guidance he receives from God, especially during challenging times.

"This award isn’t just for me—it’s for all the young people in Samoa and the Pacific who are dedicated to making a difference in their communities," he said. "It has only inspired me more to keep pushing forward, knowing that the work we do is having a real and positive impact."

Currently, Malaki serves as a Senior Members Officer at the Samoa National Provident Fund (SNPF) and is deeply passionate about youth empowerment and community development. He is also the co-chair of the first-ever Samoa National Youth Advisory Board 2025. Malaki founded the Sonelau Development Group, which focuses on agricultural development to support family income. His drive is fueled by a vision to empower his community and create a more sustainable future for Samoa’s next generation.

"Youth empowerment has always been at the heart of what I do. I believe that when young people are given the right opportunities and support, they can make a real difference in their communities. What drives me is seeing the potential in our youth—their resilience, creativity, and drive to bring change," Malaki said.

Through his work in community development, sports, humanitarian efforts, and economic projects, Malaki aims to create spaces where young people can grow, develop leadership skills, and contribute to the future of Samoa. He believes in not just giving youth a voice but ensuring that their voices are heard, valued, and acted upon.

"For me, empowering youth isn’t just about giving them a voice—it’s about making sure that voice is heard, valued, and acted upon," Malaki stated.

Malaki is one of only four youths from the Pacific to be acknowledged as a finalist in this prestigious award. The other finalists hail from Australia and the Solomon Islands.

The top regional winners and the highly anticipated Commonwealth Young Person of the Year will be announced at a special ceremony on March 12, 2025, hosted by Commonwealth Secretary-General, The Rt Hon Patricia Scotland KC.

The Commonwealth Youth Awards recognise the outstanding contributions made by young people in advancing the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and in enhancing development within their communities and beyond. This year’s adjudication process saw over 800 applications being reviewed by a panel of 54 Pan-Commonwealth adjudicators, culminating in the selection of 20 finalists.

The awards ceremony will be held at Marlborough House, the headquarters of the Commonwealth Secretariat, where it will be attended by senior government officials, youth leaders, and other important stakeholders.
