Man admits drugs charges
A man charged with possession of drugs and ammunition changed his plea to guilty after initially denying the charges.
David Tualagi, 48, appeared in the Supreme Court before Judge Justice Niava Mata Tuatagaloa on Wednesday.
Tualagi informed the court that he was ready to proceed to a hearing on the charges.
Tualagi is charged with possession of marijuana leaves, and marijuana seeds, possession of a scale and possession of unlawful ammunition.
He told the court that he was pleading not guilty because the scale found on him did not belong to him but to a couple. The defendant told the court that he had no witnesses to call when asked by Justice Tuatagaloa.
"So, are you saying that police should look for this couple to witness?," Justice Tuatagaloa asked the accused. Tualagi said no.
"Have not had enough of going to prison?" Justice Tuatagaloa asked Tualagi.
"I will please change my plea to guilty your honour," Tualagi replied.
Justice Tuatagaloa reminded the defendant not to change his plea because she told him off. She told him that she was doing her duty as a judge.
"Let me remind you, do not change your plea because I told you off (otegia) because that is my role as a judge," Justice Tuatagaloa said.
Tualagi re-affirmed that he changed his plea to guilty for all four charges.
The defendant appeared unrepresented and was taken back into custody to await the sentencing date on 20 March.
Before he was taken into custody, Justice Tuatagaloa reminded the defendant that the sentence would be an imprisonment term.
According to the summary of facts, the defendant's house was raided by police in June last year. Police found ammunition, a scale and marijuana at his home.
The defendant was remanded in custody in July last year and Justice Tuatagaloa told the accused that all the time spent in custody will be deducted from his sentence in March.
