While Vaimauga College will reward students who have made it to the National University of Samoa, attempts are underway to ensure the 20 who did not get their results due to unpaid exam fees will join their schoolmates.

Principal Faumuina Tovio Taefu confirmed to Samoa Observer that 26 students have registered to start at NUS for the foundation level.

Faumuina said he contacted the Ministry of Education and Culture and the students who did not get their results have potential.

"I feel sorry for these students who haven't received their results due to unpaid exam fees but I know most of these 20 students have the potential to reach university levels," Faumuina said.

The school will have its thanksgiving service for the 26 students who have made it to NUS and monetary rewards will be given to them as a token of appreciation from the school for reaching this far.

Faumuina said Vaimauga College in the past years did not have this many students making university levels, especially University Preparatory Year (UPY).

"This is why we are very grateful for the results and these students deserve to be acknowledged," Faumuina added.

The students on a notice posted by the school admin on social media were told to attend the Thanksgiving service on Friday and to wear their NUS uniforms.

Faumuina said this was a motivation for the whole school to strive for the best results, especially for the Year 12 students.

Faumuina said Vaimauga College had been sponsoring students from low-income families because they had the potential to learn.

The monetary rewards for the NUS students come from the school.

"We didn't want to add another burden to the parents but instead the reward is from the school itself to acknowledge these students and their academic achievements," Faumuina said.
