Schools and communities in Samoa are experiencing an enriching cultural exchange as Te Paringa Tai, a renowned Kapa Haka group from Tauranga, New Zealand, is in the country as part of Waitangi Day celebrations.

“We’re so excited to be partnering with Te Matatini to bring this group of talented performers over to mark this very important day in New Zealand’s history,” said New Zealand High Commissioner Si’alei van Toor. “This visit underscores the strong ties between our nations and allows us to share Māori culture with our Samoan friends.”

During their stay, Te Paringa Tai visited several schools, including Vaiala Beach School, Maluafou College, and St Joseph’s College. Students have had the unique opportunity to learn about Kapa Haka, witness powerful performances, and even participate by singing a waiata (song) of their own.

The 18-member ensemble, hailing from the Matakana and Rangiwaea islands in Tauranga Harbour, has travelled to Samoa under the auspices of the New Zealand High Commission in collaboration with Te Matatini, New Zealand’s national Kapa Haka festival. The visit aims to strengthen the ties between Samoa and Aotearoa through the sharing of Māori performing arts and cultural traditions.

Kapa Haka, a discipline that embodies Māori language, history, and identity through song and dance, offers a means of cultural expression and education. Through this visit, Te Paringa Tai hopes to share the significance of whakapapa (genealogy), kōrero tuku iho (ancient stories), tikanga (cultural practices), and tohu whenua (landmarks of cultural importance) with Samoan audiences.

Julian Rolleston and Ripeka Murray, the group’s leaders, expressed their enthusiasm for the opportunity to engage with Samoan communities.

“It’s great to be here in Samoa this week, taking Kapa Haka back into the Pacific and celebrating the connection between Samoa and Aotearoa,” said Rolleston.

The group’s arrival was marked by a traditional Samoan ‘ava ceremony hosted by the Samoa Tourism Association. Their visit continues until Saturday, providing more opportunities for cultural exchange and celebration.

The New Zealand High Commission will host a free public concert at Friendship Park on Thursday, February 6, from 4 pm to 6 pm, with Te Paringa Tai set to perform at 5 pm.
