Police are continuing to investigate the escape of notorious inmate Lauititi Tualima from Tanumalala Prison last Wednesday, but as of yet, they have not determined how the convicted criminal managed to break free.

Auapa'au Logoitino Filipo, Commissioner for Police and Prison, confirmed the ongoing investigation when questioned by this newspaper.

Authorities have requested the public's assistance in locating the escapee, as they work to gather information on his whereabouts.

Tualima, a man with a long and violent criminal history, escaped the facility at approximately 7 p.m. last Wednesday.

While specific details of his escape remain unclear, police are urging anyone with information to come forward, emphasising that the fugitive is considered dangerous and should not be approached.

Tualima has a criminal record that spans multiple serious offences, including burglary, theft, robbery, breaking and entering, rape, grievous bodily harm, and, notably, previous escapes from prison.

Currently, Tualima is serving a sentence of more than 20 years after admitting to the rape of an Australian tourist.

His sentencing in 2016 was handed down by Judge Justice Lesatele Rapi Va'ai, who imposed an 18-year addition to a previous 20-year sentence for other crimes.

After serving the initial 20 years for prior convictions, Tualima would have been required to serve an additional 18 years for the most recent charges. The severity of his crimes and the length of his sentences reflect the danger he poses to the public.

Authorities have also issued a stern warning regarding the legal implications of harboring an escaped convict.

Anyone found aiding Tualima in evading capture could face serious criminal charges, including imprisonment.

As the search for Tualima continues, the police are appealing to the public for any tips or information that could assist in his recapture. Police have assured the public that all information will be taken seriously and could play a crucial role in locating the fugitive.
