Following the hostage ordeal in Siusega last Friday, people living in the Siusega area are concerned about their safety. Residents claim that they have also noticed an increase in crimes such as theft, break-ins, and burglary.

Theresa Ah Kau said they were now staying alert whether it was day or night. She also has urged her community to work together to keep their village safe and secure.

"It is very disheartening to see and hear about all these incidents happening in our area. Even last year there were lots of break-ins that I saw on social media from our area," she said.

"I am not sure whether those families have got their property back. This also should act as a wake-up call to those residing here in Siusega to tighten the locks and security for their homes."

According to people who stayed close to the Chinese shop where the hostage incident went down, the incident has made them consider having cameras around their property.

"It is better to be safe than sorry. The world we're living in right now, no one is safe. People are not afraid to shoot another person. But we must be alert and aware," said a resident.

"We must all be careful, we need to keep our communities safe, especially for our children. There are so many people going around and breaking into other people's homes, stealing items, and so much more as we hear on the news.

"We must be on our guard 24/7. Let's work together to ensure that our community and country is a safe place for everyone."

Residents acknowledged the work of the Ministry of Police on Friday in resolving the hostage situation before it escalated into something bigger.

Meanwhile some residents have requested more police patrol in the area and some have suggested routine foot patrol as well.
