Customer service concern raised

Concerns have been raised by tourists about the lack of quality customer service being offered at local supermarkets and businesses.

Last month, a Samoan living abroad for eight years returned for a tour. She claimed she encountered bad customer service in various places and is concerned that this could be the reason why many tourists do not want to return.

Nelly Tolua talked about numerous workplaces where she went and how the employees treated them disrespectfully.

“This goes double for those who don't even speak. There seems to be an attitude that the customers depend on them and not the other way around,” he said.

He also advised the employees to display faces that will draw tourists, particularly those travelling from abroad, to Samoa regularly.

“This is because the faces and facial expressions of the employees will draw more visitors and also drive away clients,” he said.

“As a proud Samoan, I express pride in my people but note that the foreign visitors and those who are critical are typically former Samoan citizens who have never had the opportunity to experience the rich and fascinating sights of another country.

“Additionally, visitors have to be kind as well. Although you may see things from other countries that you disagree with, to our residents, that is what works.

“This does not characterise our prestigious nation or our welcoming, all-encompassing culture.”

According to Tinaka Taito, not all foreigners receive the same treatment.

“As a Māori who has lived here for eight months, I wanted to relate that we went to Georgie's Pizza last night and were caught walking in the pouring rain,” she said.

“You constantly hear outsiders talking about the customer service. I looked like a complete disaster! She offered me some tissues to wipe my face and greeted me with the sweetest, most sympathetic smile.

"Outstanding customer support! Georgie, you did a fantastic job! Share the positive aspects with everyone and refrain from claiming that's the case in Samoa, as that is untrue. This place has some outstanding people who provide the best customer service”

Terry Pea, a local, said it is not right to judge the customer service of the local industry since visitors don’t know how hard people work.

“They never know what other people are struggling with and also never judge the book by its cover because you never know what that person is going through,” he said.

“If they ever come to visit and see those facial reactions from our people then please respect them and their work. Life is hard so they are trying their best.”
