A 46-year-old man from Siusega is in police custody following a tense and frightening confrontation with law enforcement on Friday afternoon, during which he shot at three police officers, injuring one.

The man has been formally charged with multiple offences, including attempted murder, unlawful possession of a firearm, and armed with a dangerous weapon, among other potential charges.

The incident unfolded when police responded to a call about a domestic dispute at the Chinese man's residence, where he also operates his business.

According to Police Commissioner Auapa'au Logoitino Filipo, the dispute involved the man and his ex-wife, a Samoan national.

When officers arrived on the scene, the situation rapidly escalated as the man opened fire, injuring one police officer.

The officer was quickly transported to the hospital for treatment and underwent surgery on Saturday to remove a bullet that grazed through his neck

The situation grew more tense as the man, after firing at police, barricaded himself inside his home, holding his ex-wife hostage at gunpoint.

Police officers who arrived on the scene were forced to pause their intervention and focus on de-escalating the standoff.

As the hours dragged on, police blocked off the main road and worked tirelessly to negotiate with the man to peacefully resolve the situation.

After more than three hours of negotiations, the man surrendered to police at around 7:30 p.m. without further injury.

Fortunately, no other casualties were reported, and the hostage was unharmed.

The police praised the swift response of the community, particularly residents of Siusega, for their cooperation in adhering to police instructions and staying clear of the area during the tense standoff.

Auapa'au also acknowledged the support of the Chinese Embassy, whose translators assisted in helping police officers communicate more effectively with the suspect during the negotiations.

He also expressed relief that the situation, which could have escalated further, was resolved without additional violence.

The charges against the 46-year-old defendant stem from his actions during the standoff, as well as an outstanding arrest warrant.

The man faces multiple charges related to the attempted murder of police officers, possession of illegal firearms, and other offences. He is set to appear in court on 11 February 2025, to face the charges.

"We are grateful that this incident was resolved without further loss of life or injury, but we are also mindful of the distress caused to the families and the community, particularly those who live nearby," said the Police Commissioner.

"It was a tense situation, but through careful negotiation and the support of our partners, we were able to secure a peaceful resolution."

The police have urged the public to remain vigilant and continue cooperate with law enforcement efforts to maintain peace and security within the community.
