Fa'asalele'aga No.2 yet to submit missing money report
The district council of Fa'asalele'aga No.2 is yet to submit a report to the appropriate ministries on the misappropriated $175,000 months after the Attorney General gave her opinion.
The missing fund was supposed to pay staff members of the district council and was only discovered when the district council was questioned by the District Development Project Steering Committee.
A report was submitted to Attorney General Su'a Hellene Wallwork following an investigation by the Ministry of Finance and the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development. Su'a in her opinion last year said there was a misappropriation of funds and recommended the MWCSD ask the district council for a response.
Member of parliament for Fa'asalele'aga No.2 Magele Sekati Fiaui said there was no development in the case.
Magele told Samoa Observer that the district council was still working on the report that needs to be submitted to the Attorney General as instructed last November.
The district council was to submit all reports on the missing $175,000 in 14 days.
When asked why there was a delay in submitting those reports, Magele said the council was still preparing them.
Magele also confirmed that all staff of the Fa'asalele'aga No.2 district council also received their salaries.
"The staff of the Fono Fa'avae already received their salaries again, and we are yet to submit the report to the AG as instructed," Magele said.
The inquiry casts a shadow over Magele's involvement as he and the district council secretary received this money. Magele has claimed he was unaware of how the money went missing.
Questions linger regarding the utilisation of the grant and the potential ramifications for the local community.
The AG had also recommended to involve appropriate authorities which may include the police, however, to date, the police's service has not been required.
