Dancing into a new legacy: Malualii Siva Academy
The Eti brothers, Misionare and Eti have come a long way since forming a dance group called New Boys, inspired by their church. They helped other performers do what they love and earn a living.
This has evolved into a professional dance troupe performing a fusion of traditional siva Samoa and various dance styles. The dance group started to grow and they soon launched the Malualii Siva Academy.
"In 2010, my brother, Misionare Eti, and I, Eti Eti, participated in a youth hip-hop competition. To prepare for this event, we organised a dance group named New Boyz, inspired by the name of our church, EFKS Ierusalema Fou, New Jerusalem," said Eti Eti.
"What began as a one-day event quickly transformed into numerous invitations to perform, ultimately developing into a source of income for us. We established a model in which clients would pay us for our performances.
"Our repertoire evolved to incorporate a blend of traditional Siva Samoa, humorous elements, and various dance styles, enriching the experience for our audiences. In July 2024, we launched the Malualii Siva Academy marking a significant milestone in our journey and then evolved into an all-male dance group based in American Samoa.
"With a roster that has grown from 12 to over 80 dancers, our members range in age from six years to those over 21, showcasing the rich tapestry of youth talent in our community."
Their choreography has been used globally through social media platforms such as YouTube, TikTok, Facebook and Instagram. They have had quite a memorable 2024 as a group.
"A few highlights in 2024 was our first MSA stage performance at the American Samoa’s annual Mosooi festivities. Also, our participation in Samoa’s renowned Teuila Festival in November further highlighted our commitment to sharing the art of Siva Samoa with a broader audience," said Eti Eti.
"MSA has also taken part in the Festival of Pacific Arts and Culture in Hawaii. A few collaboration performances including Miss Pacific Islands Moemoana Schwenke, Miss American Samoa Pauliana Vitale and well-known artists Josh Tatofi, Wayno, A.R.T, Sprawnbreezie and many more."
Malualii Siva Academy believes in the importance of passing down a cultural legacy and sharing their talents with the community and the world.
"Our academy not only focuses on Siva Samoa but also encompasses basic cultural lessons, creating a holistic approach to learning. Beyond dance, the academy serves as a safe space for our dancers, providing support and understanding in a world filled with challenges. We are dedicated to nurturing the next generation, ensuring their talents are shared and celebrated."
Malualii Siva Academy are currently in Samoa and did a show at the Siva Afi Entertainment on Tuesday evening.
