Relocating not an option for businesses

Despite the continuous floods that have plagued businesses at Fugalei and Savalalo for more than two weeks many are not considering relocating.

According to the businesses, the cost of renting is exorbitant. They said it would take time to settle and move everything to a new location.

The Fugalei, Savalalo and Taufusi areas have flooded almost daily as more than 100 millimetres of rain is experienced due to the weather system affecting the country.

The heavy rain, saturation of the soil and blocked drainages are causing the floods. On Saturday, the area in front of the SNPF Plaza was also flooded.

Shops have been forced to close early and some have experienced low customer traffic due to the deteriorating road conditions.

One of the business owners at Savalalo who did not wish to be named said that the location at the moment is great and she is not looking at moving any time soon.

"Our location is good for business. It is easier for our customers to find us. The rent is cheaper here as well, I guess we just need to endure this heavy rainfall season for now. But relocation is definitely out of the question," she said.

Micheal Vaipua, a business owner, urged the government to fix the blocked waterway problem and plan the infrastructure so it lasts for future development.

"It is clear that the planning was not done very thoughtfully. No use blaming what has been done. What can be done is to solve the problem and build better," he said.

"My business thrives from this location but the rain has seen it slow down. I ma sure things will change but for the future, we need urgent action."

Recent flooding has cost them their customers and sales however they are still happy that as long as they can pay their rent.

They barricaded their doors during the rainy season and after the heavy rainfall. Some businesses have to deal with cleaning up all the dirt in front of their stores.

Other businesses also had to deal with the same issue in terms of their sales but they are also not considering relocating.

The latest report from Samoa Meteorological Service states that the former Tropical Disturbance TD04F was named Tropical Pita at 7 pm on Friday and was in Tonga. Tropical Cyclone Pita is far outside Samoa's area of responsibility, poses no threat to Samoa, and is moving towards the southeast.

However, wet and windy conditions will persist across the island.
