Flood concerns near Palisi

The recurring flooding in the Palisi and Alamagoto areas remains a significant concern for the local community, particularly for Mrs Gabriel's Preschool.

According to the school’s principal, Matile Gabriel, the primary cause of the floods is the blockage of waterways designed to channel water flow.

One major obstruction is located near Ah Liki Construction at Palisi, where accumulated debris creates a severe bottleneck during the rainy season. The overflowing water also spills onto the road flooding the road in Vaimea heading to Alamagoto. Many residents also experience flooding of their compounds.

"This flooding happens every year during the rainy season, but once the sun comes out, everything clears up," said Mrs. Gabriel. "However, it remains a worry for us, especially since it’s so close to the school grounds."

Despite the ongoing problem, the school has no plans to shut down unless conditions worsen.

"Our school building and the main grounds are safe for students, but what concerns us is the nearby ground where water flows through blocked tunnels," Mrs Gabriel explained.

"If the situation isn't too severe when school starts, classes will continue as normal."

However, if flooding persists or worsens by the first week of February, the school may be forced to close temporarily.

"In that case, we’ll cancel classes until the weather improves, and students will return by the second week of February."

In response to the situation, Mrs Gabriel expressed a desire for government intervention to prevent future flooding.

"We’d like to ask the Ministry of Natural Resources and Environment (MNRE) to conduct a survey of the area and address the issue. Perhaps they can dig or create new tunnels to improve water flow and reduce flooding," she said.

"If nothing is done, this could lead to environmental issues like an increase in mosquito populations, which would pose health risks to our students and the community."

As the rainy season continues, the residents and staff of Mrs Gabriel's Preschool hope for urgent action to resolve the flooding problem before it disrupts the education of young children.

Meanwhile, the situation in Fugalei, Taufusi and surrounding town areas has not improved. The main road in Fugalei remains flooded with the road condition worsening daily.

According to the Samoa Meteorology Service, another tropical depression TD04F has formed and will be passing below Samoa bringing more rain.

The Land Transport Authority and its contractors were kept busy on Friday as they removed fallen trees and landslips along the East Coast Road and near Siumu. The LTA has also been proactive in warning road users about accessible roads and flooded fords.
