The Apia International Port in Matautu has been temporarily closed since Tuesday due to extreme weather conditions.

The Samoa Ports Authority (SPA) informed the public and relevant stakeholders in an official statement that the closure continues into Wednesday.

The closure has impacted operations at the port, halting any vessel movements until further notice.

Despite suspending activities at the international port, the Samoa Ports Authority assured that the main office and cargo/container operations will continue as usual during regular business hours.

The closure of the port is a precautionary measure taken to safeguard vessels and personnel in response to the ongoing adverse weather conditions.

The severe weather, which includes heavy rainfall, strong winds, and rough seas, has not affected inter-island ferry services.

Ferries between Upolu and Savai’i continue to operate according to their regular schedules. Vessel captains have been taking precautions urging passengers to remain indoors as they traverse the choppy waters, where turbulent conditions and gusty winds prevail.

Local authorities are closely monitoring the situation, and further updates on the port’s status will be provided as conditions evolve.

The public is advised to stay informed and heed any further warnings from the Samoa Ports Authority and other relevant bodies.
