Manu Samoa coach resigns
Mase Mahonri Schwalger has resigned from his position as head coach of Manu Samoa effective immediately.
Lakapi Samoa said the board has accepted the decision.
Mase was charged by police last month on multiple sexual allegations and released on bail.
He was charged with unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, sexual conduct with a person under 16, indecent assault and common assault with possible additional charges.
Following the charges in September, Mase was suspended by Lakapi Samoa with a review of the suspension due in December.
“This resignation follows a period of suspension granted to Mase following the filing of criminal charges against him in court,” said Lakapi Samoa in a statement.
“Under his leadership in the past year, 2024 Manu Samoa achieved significant milestones including strong performances on the international stage, beginning with defeating Tier 1 Nation, Italy at home and a respectable performance in the Pacific Nations Cup.”
Lakapi Samoa Chairman, Tuilaepa Dr Sailele Malielegaoi, expressed gratitude for Mase's service.
"Mase has given everything to our country through the Manu Samoa, and his contributions to the team and our rugby community will always be acknowledged. His leadership has been a key part of our journey, and we wish him all the best."
Lakapi Samoa said they would search for a new head coach and remained committed to ensuring that Manu Samoa continued to grow and succeed at the highest levels of international rugby.
In early November, Mase denied seven charges of sexual allegations against him in the Supreme Court. He pleaded not guilty to charges that included unlawful sexual connection, attempted sexual violation, sexual conduct with a person under 16, indecent assault, and common assault.
Lakapi Samoa’s failure to appoint a successor at the earliest possible opportunity may impact Manu Samoa. 2025 is an important year.
This is the year that will determine if Manu Samoa qualify for the extended Rugby World Cup in 2027. The Pacific Nations Cup after the June and July international window will be used as a qualifier.
