Seiuli Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson is coming home
Seiuli Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson revealed via social media that he would soon return to Samoa. This would be his first visit since 2004 when he was bestowed his high chief title by the late Head of State of Samoa, Paramount Chief Malietoa Tanumafili II.
"After 20 years of proudly carrying our culture with me around the world, I can’t wait to soon return home to Samoa. I already have chills just thinking about it." At 52 years old, Johnson reflected on the honour of being bestowed the title of High Chief Seiuli by the late High Chief Malietoa Tanumafili II, a moment that has shaped his identity and commitment to his heritage.
The famous actor-wrestler son of Samoa is set to reconnect with his cultural roots and the island that holds significant meaning in his life.
"I gave my word and made a commitment 20 years ago to His Highness High Chief Malietoa Tanumafili II and to our people of Samoa, that I would “leave my boyish ways behind” (well, I try) the post said. The "boyish behaviour" is about the what the presiding orator at the time of the title bestowal said, Seiuli Taulafo of Utuali’i:
“From today onwards you will no longer be known as Dwayne, but will carry the title Seiuli, the son of Malietoa (Alo o Malietoa) - You will leave your boyish ways behind you as you are now a chief (matai) of the Sa Malietoa family, a chief of Samoa.”
Seiuli The Rock acknowledged the significance of his Samoan High Chief Title, calling it one of the greatest honours of his life. In his post, he wrote, "Besides having my three daughters, my Samoan High Chief Title, High Chief Seiuli, is one of the greatest honours of my life."
He also acknowledged his diverse heritage, proudly carrying his "Samoan, Polynesian, and Black culture around the world with great respect, pride, kindness, mana, humility, and warrior spirit."
As he looks forward to his journey back home, he dedicated his next career ventures in partnership with WWE and collaboration with Netflix to his lineage, stating, "Tomorrow night is dedicated to my grandfather, the High Chief Peter Maivia, my grandmother, Lia Maivia, and my dad, Rocky 'Soulman' Johnson, and my ancestors who have ALL paved the way."
