Lockdown was for safety reasons
The decision to lock down the police headquarters on Friday 3 January 2025 during the arrival and departure of the Minister of Agriculture and Fisheries La'auli Leuatea Schmidt was a precautionary measure taken to ensure safety and prevent unnecessary commotion.
This was confirmed by Police Commissioner Auapa'au Logoitino Filipo in response to queries from this newspaper on Saturday.
According to Commissioner Auapa'au, the decision was made after learning that La'auli had announced in a live broadcast the night before that he would be appearing at the police station the next morning.
"We decided to lock down the compound for precautions," Auapa'au stated. "We wanted to avoid a large scene and acted in the best interest of public safety, anticipating that many supporters might gather at the station."
The Commissioner further clarified that the lockdown was also for La'auli’s protection.
“It was a precautionary measure to ensure the Minister's safety while he was at the police station,” he added, emphasising that the situation could have escalated if a large crowd had turned up.
La'auli who was officially charged with multiple criminal offences on Friday expressed surprise at the heightened security measures.
Speaking to the media shortly after being charged, he said, “I was surprised to find the police compound secured and locked down. When I asked about it, I was told it was done for my protection in case someone tried to harm me.”
La'auli also reflected on a similar experience after the last general election, recalling how he and other members of his party arrived at Parliament in Mulinu’u to be sworn in, only to find the premises locked. "Seeing the police compound locked gave me flashbacks of that day," he said.
The Minister added that part of the reason for the lockdown appeared to be to prevent photographers and journalists from entering the compound during his visit.
Despite the tight security, La'auli was formally charged and released without bail conditions.
The incident has raised questions about handling high-profile cases and whether such extraordinary security measures are necessary.
Commissioner Auapa'au reiterated that the police acted following what they deemed necessary to maintain order, prevent disruption, and ensure safety.
