Graduating from the maritime course at the National University of Samoa could not be sweeter for 22-year-old Iosefa Iole. His academic year involved weekly travel from Lano, Savaii.

As a proud fa'afafine, Iosefa said his difference was never an issue with his teachers and fellow students.

“Graduating is a wonderful experience that feels like a way to repay your parents for their hard work and prayers," he said.

“Attending school from primary school through college and now NUS is a significant learning experience for us as students, parents and families, who help with tuition and other school-related expenses.

“Graduating is a present for our parents and all those who cared for us since we will never be able to repay them for their financial support, but today is the day to show them how hard they worked to get me to graduate."

Iosefa was in his second year at the School of Maritime Training, graduating with a Certificate II in Nautical Studies as a sailor last year and with a fisheries course this year.

“It was difficult for me to attend school this year because I live in Lano and have to fulfil my responsibilities as a student, church member, and family member, but I was also confident that God is always there for me” he said.

“Being a fa’afafine does not stop me from doing what I know is best for me. I am proud because in maritime everyone is equal and has the same rights."

Iosefa was grateful that his being a fa'afafine never became a reason for the school not to allow him to take the course. He is grateful to the teachers who never treated him differently and constantly assisted him. .

"Education is difficult, and NUS is not a place to wander around and take a break. Be optimistic in everything you do, and keep in mind that NUS is the last step for you to push through with whatever goal you have."

"Always focus on studies going hand in hand with prayers to God, and you will achieve anything you want in life."
