Milovale's journey at Nofotane

It is a way of supporting families and ensuring that financial woes do not become the reason for violence in families. The Samoa Victim Support Group's Nofotane Market provides an opportunity.

Among the women gathered at Vaitele was Milovale Sam Finau. She is one of the mothers from the Nofotane group at Fasito'o-Uta. She went into the Nofotane group in 2018.

In an interview, she said she believes in hard work and self-reliance. The 59-year-old mother said she has children who work, but she does not see herself as a mother who relies on her kids for everything.

She has her ways of making money through her skills and God-given talent.

"I have my children working, but I can't just sit at home and do nothing. I have these talents which I can put to use to earn some money to assist with our financial struggles," she said.

"Not all the time my children would have money for all our needs, the cost of living is very high. These handicrafts like the flowers, leis, the lavalava and plants are all made by us. And I'm telling you, it is not easy.

"But I'm grateful for my daughter and grandkids who are helping me with my market. My granddaughters know how to sew these leis and create flowers (sei), and my daughter helps out too.

"Samoa is not poor is just that our people are so lazy. They are too reliant on others. For me, I am happy that I can contribute to our family's livelihood through this.

"For my crafts here, I am able to buy food, cash power, and sometimes my kids need money for something and I am able to provide that. I can do this in a day and earn a $100 if I'm able to sell them all. But my kids, they work and get paid fortnightly and it's just $300 plus."

Milovale is grateful to God for the talents and to Samoa Victim Support Group Nofotane program for providing a platform to showcase her talents and skills. She also acknowledged their help with trainings and assistance with whatever they needed.

More than 10 Nofotane groups were present at the S.V.S.G market at Vaitele. They were able to display their work of the whole year and made sales throughout the day.
