Manu Samoa 7s and Manusina 7s qualify for Challenger Series
The first step to returning to the World Sevens Series has been successful for the Manu Samoa 7s who only had to reach the finals of the Oceania 7s in the Solomon Islands to qualify for the World Rugby Challenger Series.
The Manusina 7s have also made the cut.
Manu Samoa beat Tonga, 27 - 0 in the semi-final to make it to the final against Fiji. The Fijians are a core team in the Series which means that Samoa now goes through to the Challenger Series.
Manu Samoa 7s lost their place as a core team after failing to win any of the games in the promotion relegation series at the Madrid 7s. If Samoa had failed in the Oceania 7s, the team would have had to sit out a whole year and miss out on major sevens competitions.
Su'a Hesed Ieremia, the team manager confirmed that they have qualified whether they lose or win against Fiji.
"We are preparing for our final against Fiji. Yes, we have qualified", he said.
Samoa and Tonga's semi-final match was to determine who would take on the final spot in the Challenger Series.
The top two men's teams excluding Fiji, will qualify for the Challenger Series. The top four teams from the Challenger Series then go onto the promotion relegation series for the main HSBC Seven Series.
Manusina 7s have also impressed at the Oceania 7s and also booked a showdown against Fijiana. This result also means that Manusina 7s have also qualified for the Challenger Series.
The Challenger Series is like the World Sevens Series. At the end of the circuit, four teams are allowed to play in the promotion relegation tournament and get a chance to be part of the core teams.
This year Uruguay and Kenya have made the cut at the expense of Canada and Samoa in the men's competition.
