A presentation done by the Samoa Bureau of Statistics during the Faafafine and Faafatama Week showed that the majority of faafafine population in Samoa is in the 15 to 19-years age group.

According to the statistics that were presented, the majority of the faafafine's highest level of education was at the college level.

In an interview with Junior Toloa also known as Jayde, he said it all came down to how the families see them and whether their parents would accept them for who they are and what they are.

"I believe the reason why the majority of our kind is in that age group is because right now parents are more open and quite approachable but for us, it was difficult to open up and be straightforward with our parents about who we are," he said.

"I grew up with strict parents and my parents were very cultural. So I can only be a faafafine when I go to school, or with my friends but when I'm home I become a guy straight away.

"But now they have accepted me. In my view, I think it comes down to us as well. Some of us assume the worse, we might think that our parents won't accept us if we come out as faafafine. So we tend not to tell them.

"So we've already made up our mind before we even asked them. But honestly, I was scared of telling my parents about myself, but I did it. And they welcomed me with open arms."

The statistics showed that the majority attended the Congregational Christian Church in Samoa.

The statistics also revealed that most faafafine were self-employed.

As witnessed in some of the events hosted in Samoa such as the Miss Samoa pageant, some of the designers behind the traditional attire categories are faafafine. Some of them are in the make-up and hair stylist business, lawyers, nurses, and other professions.

The Samoa Faafafine Association has always maintained that the group is not about gay rights and does not promote same-sex marriage. The Association has said there organisation was about the welfare of their members and providing them representation.
