Not a dry eye in sight as tears of joy flowed freely among the Lesā family as Tofigaonafanua Jade Lesa was declared the 2024 DUX of Fa'atuatua Christian College on Wednesday.

Surrounded by her loved ones, affectionately known as Fina, she stood at the centre of an emotional celebration, reflecting on her journey and the support from her family and friends.

“I'm very thankful because it was only by God and through God I was able to do any of this,” said Fina.

The prestigious award marked a significant milestone in her academic career and served as a heartfelt tribute to her late family members, dedicating her achievements to her great-grandmother and aunty, who both passed away recently.

"They were always there for me, even through the ups and downs, and I just want to do my best to make them proud,” Fina shared.

She also added that her awards were dedicated to her parents, former Samoa Observer Editor Mataafa Keni and Laufaleaina Lesa.

In her valedictorian speech, Fina emphasised the importance of gratitude and the unwavering support she received from her loved ones and teachers. Despite feeling nervous about speaking in public, she skillfully captivated the audience, alternating between laughter and tears.

“It felt really good standing up there, seeing all of my family and friends crying. It's a joy,” said Fina.

She took Philippians 4:13, “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” as her guiding scripture throughout her academic year.

This scripture captured Fina’s journey at Fa'atuatua Christian College, which she joined in Year 11.

"Before I came to Fa’atuatua, I didn’t really care about my work, but since I moved here, I’ve improved a lot,” she said, highlighting the growth she experienced through her deepening relationship with God.

Fina's older sister, Solania Lesā, was filled with pride as she watched Fina deliver her speech. Solania, who helped Fina write her valedictorian speech, was touched when Fina mentioned her during the speech as Fina's "ultimate inspiration."

"She's an absolute blessing to all of us. She’s our baby, so to see her up here, you know, and like, we've seen the hard work she's put in. We just felt so proud,” Solania said.

Looking ahead, Fina has ambitious plans for her future. “I’m planning on going to the National University of Samoa next year, hopefully finding a scholarship for arts,” she said, expressing her aspirations in law, along with a budding interest in interior design and fashion.

Fina took first place in Computer, History, Geography, English and Christian Living. Her other awards were 2024 Prefect, first in her class and first place overall in Year 12 Enoch.
