Flights begin at regional terminal

It has been a smooth transition for Talofa Airways to begin operation out of the regional airport this week with eight flights per day to and from American Samoa.

Founder of the locally owned airline, Toleafoa Jeffrey Hunter said the smaller terminal was convenient for passengers in processing their departure and arrival in just a few steps.

“We haven’t had any delays or issues, our operation is running smoothly,” said Toleafoa.

“We did have passengers who didn’t receive the advice of where we are operating from now and others did. So we stationed staff at the main terminal to give directions to passengers to the regional airport.

“We had eight flights yesterday [Monday] and another eight today. It’s convenient in terms of the process of clearing passengers and everything is close by. After they check-in, they don’t have to walk far to the boarding room like the main one.”

The $25 million regional airport also has immigration and customs officers stationed at the terminal since it officially opened its doors on Monday this week.

Asked if this means Talofa Airways will no longer operate out of Fagalii, Toleafoa said it all depends on demand.

He said should the number of passengers drop they still have the option of landing at Fagalii to save costs.

“If we lose here then we operate other flights from Fagalii based on demand, that’s how a business runs,” he added.

It could not be confirmed if Samoa Airways will also move its operation to the regional airport. Phone calls made to the Chief Executive Officer, Fauoo Fatu Tielu were not answered.

A statement from the Samoa Airport Authority noted the “state-of-the-art terminal is intentionally equipped to handle increased passenger volumes with proficiency and ease”.

“As Samoa continues to grow its infrastructure at Faleolo and strengthen its position on the global aviation stage, the starting of operation at the Regional Terminal is a clear indication of the Government’s forward-thinking approach to enhancing its connectivity and accessibility.”
