Arif Zaman, Executive Director of the Commonwealth Business Women Network, felt an immediate bond upon arriving in Samoa, sensing “an invisible thread woven between nations, cultures, and people.”

He was in Samoa for the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (C.H.O.G.M.).

As delegates from across the globe gathered, they were enveloped in the warmth of Samoan hospitality. Each village took part in this grand festival, with children practising traditional dances and families crafting handmade gifts. Elders shared their rich stories, embodying the spirit of Samoa—a spirit rooted in pride and love.

At the heart of the celebrations was an Interfaith Service, where Arif met Loau Donina Va'a, the CEO of the Ministry of Women, Community, and Social Development. Their conversation revealed the remarkable progress made at the Women’s and Youth forums, leading to invitations to the Paradise at Risk exhibition and the Manaia Women’s Market.

“Here, Arif truly grasped the heart of Samoa: a community where connection was sacred."

One encounter deeply moved Arif. After a taxi failed to arrive, he set off on foot, only to be offered a ride by a local couple. Despite his initial hesitation, their kindness was overwhelming.

“Welcome to Samoa. We hope you enjoy your stay,” they said, embodying the generosity that defines the island. Arif reflected, “This is what makes Samoa unique. The Commonwealth isn’t just an alliance of nations; it’s a family.”

Driven to share this essence, Arif urged Loau to document the spirit of Samoa through film.

“The world should see what it means to be welcomed like this. It’s not just the landscapes or events; it’s the people. Always, the people,” he passionately expressed.

Loau, inspired by Arif’s words, recognised the strength of her nation—one that thrives on relationships and unity rather than mere geography.

As delegates departed, they took with them not only the beauty of Samoa but also a profound understanding of what it means to belong to the Commonwealth—a community bound by trust, respect, and boundless kindness.
