Project to showcase strength of women
A powerful portrait exhibition, a documentary, and a historical book designed to showcase the compelling stories of Samoan women was launched on Thursday.
The Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development launched "Ia Fa'ae'e Malama: Resilient Spirit: Portraits of Samoa's Women Warriors."
The initiative honours and shares the remarkable legacies of Samoan women who have shaped the nation through their strength and leadership.
This inspiring project was made possible through the support, DFAT via Tautai and Tautua, and UNICEF. It aims to weave together the narratives of influential Samoan women and celebrate their contributions to the society.
The Australian High Commissioner to Samoa Will Robinson and UNICEF Chief of Field Office Khin Moe Aye conveyed their collective support for the initiative and the added value of this investment in inspiring future leaders for Samoa.
More importantly, the initiative will significantly contribute to the strategic goals of the Community Sector Plan 2024-2028, advancing sustainable development and fostering inclusive societies.
A soft launch of the project's initial outputs particularly the portraits commissioned to young Samoan artists with the leadership of Principal Pelenato Liufau, of the Leulumoega Fou School of Fine Arts, will be featured in the Commonwealth Women's Forum on Monday 21 October. A series of events will follow leading up to International Women's Day 2025 and beyond.
Aligned with Samoa's national development goals, this project accentuates the importance of gender policies that enhance women's participation in governance, drive economic growth, and improve health and education outcomes.
"We believe in the transformative power of storytelling, rooted in our rich oral traditions passed down through generations," said the Minister for Women, Community and Social Development Mulipola Anarosa Ale Molioo.
"By highlighting the inspiring legacies of these women, this project hope to ignite a spark in today's and tomorrow's generations, encouraging them to strive for excellence in service to their families, communities, and Samoa as a whole."
The stories of these women demonstrate that challenges can be faced with resilience, just as light dispels darkness.
The strength represented by these women signifies collective empowerment, motivating us to come together and uplift one another.
"Ia Fa'ae'e Malama" urges active involvement—acknowledging and amplifying the light, inspiring communities to drive positive change and support the leadership of these extraordinary women.
