MJCA assures readiness of courthouse for CHOGM
The courthouse in Mulinuu will be one of the most used venues during the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meetings but there are concerns that the building is not ready.
A number of side events for CHOGM will be held at the courthouse.
Leaking air conditioning units, wet waiting areas, non-functioning elevators and smelly restrooms are just some of the issues that can be visibly identified.
The public in the past has raised concerns. It is now one and a half weeks to go to CHOGM and there are fears that the courthouse renovation may not be complete.
However, the Ministry of Justice and Courts Administration Chief Executive Officer Papalii John Taimalelagi is adamant that the venue will be ready and renovations will be done by Friday.
"The renovations include the toilets, all the courtrooms and on to the elevators and the whole courthouse," he said.
Papalii said he hoped that the elevators in the front that are currently broken will be fixed before the CHOGM and if not, the judges' elevators at the back of the building will be used instead.
As seen by Samoa Observer, buckets were being used to collect water from the leaking air conditioners in the courtrooms.
Papalii ensured that all of those would be fixed before CHOGM and that the cleaners would be on the alert to maintain the cleanliness of the courthouse at all times, especially the restrooms.
"MJCA has been preparing for a long-time and we are ready to host CHOGM," he said.
