Educator off to Japan
A Samoan educator is on her way to Japan to participate in a program that will allow her to produce better science curriculums for schools.
This is through a partnership between Samoa and Japan. This is being exemplified through collaborative efforts led by the Ministry of Education and Culture.
This partnership, rooted in mutual respect and a shared vision for educational improvement, has paved the way for initiatives that enhance teaching methodologies, particularly in primary science education.
At the forefront of this collaboration is the Japan International Cooperation Agency (J.I.C.A.) Knowledge Co-Creation Program (K.C.C.P.), a pivotal element of Japan’s Official Development Assistance.
The K.C.C.P. aims to improve quality education through innovative teaching practices tailored to the unique needs of partner nations. Launched in accordance with Japan's Development Cooperation Charter, established in February 2015, the program emphasizes a field-oriented approach that encourages reciprocal learning and development.
Representatives from Samoa’s Ministry of Education and Culture have actively participated in this On-Site Education Program in Japan, mastering techniques that foster students' understanding of scientific concepts through engaging activities like experiments and observations.
The program not only aligns with the educational goals of Samoa but also reinforces the spirit of cooperation and mutual growth that defines the relationship between the two nations.
As the Ministry grapples with pressing deadlines, including preparations for the upcoming national examinations and the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (C.H.O.G.M.), it remains committed to nurturing educational talent.
The Ministry has selected Mrs. Tumele Sitama Su’a Toefuataina Iele-Schmidt to participate in the K.C.C.P., focusing on the Quality Improvement of Primary Science Education: Teaching and Learning. This esteemed program will take place in Hokkaido, Japan, from October 23 to December 10, 2024.
Mrs. Iele-Schmidt, a 37-year-old Curriculum Science Specialist, plays a crucial role in overseeing the science curriculum across all educational stages in Samoa, from Early Childhood Education to secondary levels. A graduate of the University of the South Pacific, she possesses a Bachelor of Science degree and is an active member of the National University of Samoa's Curriculum Advisory Committee.
With over a decade of experience as a science educator, her commitment to enhancing the educational landscape in Samoa is unwavering.
In June 2024, Mrs. Iele-Schmidt participated in an Education Program of Study Technology held at the Applied Scholastic International Institute in St. Louis, Missouri, USA. This experience, along with her forthcoming training in Japan, is expected to significantly elevate the teaching skills of both teachers and learners across various educational levels.
Currently, the primary science curriculum in Samoa is undergoing a thorough review process.
Mrs. Iele-Schmidt has engaged in two phases of consultations with educators, principals, and school support advisors to gather insights and feedback before finalising the curriculum for expert review.
Upon her return from Japan, she plans to lead training sessions for primary science teachers and educational leaders, sharing the knowledge and methodologies acquired during her program.
This initiative underscores the Ministry’s belief that a solid foundation in science education is vital for nurturing future professionals—engineers, scientists, educators, and healthcare specialists—who will drive the nation’s development.
The cooperation between Samoa and Japan continues to flourish, characterised by shared goals and collective aspirations for educational excellence.
