Vaiala Beach School Year Eight student Mia Kapisi was over the moon and lost for words when she was declared the winner of the English category at the Samoa Observer Tusitala Short Story Competition last week.

She couldn't control her excitement as she tried hard to remember what her story was about. She believes it was something about God guiding her journey. It is about her indecisiveness in what she wants to be in the future and she believes it will be made easier with God by her side.

She recalls wanting to become a police officer, a pilot, a chef and many other things. Both her parents are CrossFit coaches. She learned to love cooking by watching her father all the time. However, she draws inspiration from her mother, Lupe Kapisi.

"All I know is that it was about me finding comfort in God. Knowing that God will always be there for me through the struggles and everything," she said.

"One of the inspirations behind my story is my church which is St Theresa of Child Jesus Parish at Lepea. But my inspiration in life would be my mom."

"The competition was about my future. I love designing, and drawing so maybe a fashion designer? I am not sure yet but it could be anything that has to do with art, designs, or just creating things. I love making stuff with anything that I can find, even drawing."

Her mother, Lupe said she was very proud of her daughter's achievements. She continues to push her daughter with her homework however there is no pressure from them (parents) to what she wants to be in the future.

"We're so proud of her. For us as parents, we will continue to provide the support that she needs with her school work. We're proud of what she has done today."

Mia encourages the children of Samoa not to rush in their decision-making but to make sure that whatever they choose is what they actually want.

"Take time and seek God's guidance when deciding on something. He will guide you on the right path. There is no need to rush, you work at your own pace," she said.
