As Samoa gears up to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (C.H.O.G.M.) in October, the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Labour has issued a critical reminder to wholesalers, retailers, and traders across the nation.

The Ministry is urging all businesses to uphold ethical practices, particularly in relation to pricing, during this significant event.

In a statement, the Ministry emphasised that no entity should exploit the upcoming C.H.O.G.M. or the impending two-week port closure as an excuse to inflate prices.

This advisory reflects the government's commitment to ensuring a fair trading environment, especially during such a high-profile occasion.

To enforce this, the Ministry, alongside the Commission, will actively monitor compliance with the Price Control Order (No.1) 2023.

This regulatory framework establishes mandatory pricing structures that all traders must adhere to, aiming to stabilise the market and protect consumers from unjust price hikes.

The Price Control Order (No.1) 2023 remains fully operational, mandating that all goods listed under this regulation be sold at specified prices.

For items not covered by this Order, traders are instructed to set prices based on landed costs, as detailed in the official costing sheets. This includes consideration for the Value Added Goods and Services Tax (V.A.G.S.T.) as well as transportation expenses.

The Ministry has provided clear guidelines for calculating wholesale prices for various categories, including dry goods and frozen items, as well as retail pricing structures for both Upolu and Savai'i.

These calculations are designed to ensure transparency and fairness in pricing practices throughout the region.

In a proactive move to protect consumer rights, the Ministry has encouraged the public to report any suspicious price increases they might encounter. Individuals are urged to gather supporting evidence, such as receipts, and contact the Fair Trading Division of the Ministry via the Toll-Free Line 8004125 or 20441.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to empower consumers and foster a transparent marketplace.

The Ministry’s call for integrity and fairness in pricing comes at a crucial time, as the nation prepares to welcome international visitors and dignitaries for the Commonwealth meeting.

The collective goal is to maintain a fair and healthy market for all citizens, ensuring that local businesses can thrive without taking advantage of the circumstances.
