Fun Run changing lives

Lives are being changed through the monthly community fun run events organised by Triathlon Samoa as they promote well-being, good health and an active lifestyle for the whole family.

This was evident on Saturday as more than a hundred people participated in the September event held at Mulinu'u.

A huge crowd gathered in the early hours of the morning to register for either the 5km, the 2.5km, or the 100m Dash for Kids. Lively music helped to motivate the participants as they warmed up first with some active stretches before taking to the road at 7 am.

Organisers welcomed walkers and runners and encouraged cheering for everyone, no matter how fast or slow. Upon completion, runners enjoyed fresh fruit and cookies. It was an event for all ages with the oldest runner being in their late sixties and the youngest at four years old.

This was the seventh community fun run of the year organised by Triathlon Samoa and numbers have been growing.

"It's a fundraiser for our triathletes, with all the entry fees going to the Federations programs, but it's also an essential part of the athletes' training," said TSA Secretary-General Lani Young.

"Times are recorded and everyone can track their improvement through the year. It's a great way to keep motivated and build a habit of improved activity, for all of us."

Le Amosa School was a powerful presence with 52 students in the fun run, led by Principal Donna Ioane who ran in the 5km.

Principal Ioane explained why their school is committed to participating.

"The event was run very smoothly, even though there was a large crowd of participants! The organisers always have the safety of the runners in mind," said Principal Ioane.

"I started challenging my students to run as my reaction to the knowledge that there is a growing population who are suffering from diabetes complications, including amputations."

"At the outset, most found the training we did at school a challenge. Today, they were excited, and I saw new levels being attained in the strive "of those who came, saw and conquered" their distances."

The next Funrun is on Saturday 5 October.
