Seasonal workers insure up

Over 200 seasonal workers at Poutasi, Falealili, as part of the Poutasi Development Trust Initiative, took the opportunity to get insurance coverage that could assist families in case of a tragedy.

In light of the recent fatalities among seasonal workers abroad, the workers signed insurance covers with Samoa Surety Insurance.

The local insurance company introduced a Term Life coverage plan designed to support the families of these individuals in Samoa.

“This coverage will be allocated to the designated family dependents listed on the policy, facilitating necessary arrangements for funerals or providing assistance to the bereaved families of those who have passed away overseas,” said Samoa Surety in a statement.

“The seasonal workers expressed that this product is highly beneficial, as they are often unaware of the potential for accidents while separated from their families.”

Fuimaono Uiti Lagavale, the team leader of the PDT RSE at Poutasi, remarked, “This coverage is extremely valuable, yet often overlooked until a tragedy occurs.”

“The presentation today has served as a crucial reminder for the team to take this coverage into account, especially following the recent loss of some of our members.”

The presentation and awareness campaign conducted by the local insurance company captured the attention of many seasonal workers, prompting several to enrol in the coverage before departing for their overseas assignments.

The lack of insurance has been an issue often highlighted by the government when it comes to seasonal workers.

Meanwhile, the bodies of the seasonal workers killed in a crash in New Zealand were brought to Samoa on Tuesday.
