Bright-eyed and curious, over 70 students from Peace Chapel Christian Preschool visited the Samoa Observer on Wednesday to learn about ways of communication in Samoa.

This is their term three theme. The students were aged between three and five years old.

"This term we have been learning about different ways of communication, like using telephones, computers, laptops and newspapers which is why we are here today, " said Oliana Tufuga, a senior teacher at the school who was also leading the trip.

According to Tufuga, the young children were aware of the newspaper being a form of communication as they had seen their parents and grandparents read it at home and had newspapers around their school grounds.

"The newspaper, it's something that we make here in Samoa and this is Samoa Observer - this is Samoa's own newspaper," said Tufuga.

She expressed the importance of teaching children about newspapers, highlighting that many families in Samoa begin their day by reading the newspaper, and where children can find daily news.

The children were split into two groups and were led by the Samoa Observers editor Shalveen Chand and sub-editor Matai'a Lanuola Tusania T Ah-Tong. The students were particularly fascinated by the printing machine at the Samoa Observer office.

"Some of the kids were like, is that an aircraft for aliens," said Tufuga.

Not only were the students stunned by the printing machine, but the teachers were also amazed by the scale of the printing operation, having previously assumed that the Samoa Observer newspapers were produced using standard printers.

"We were amazed because I thought you guys were just printed from a normal printer. But it's amazing how you guys have big machines at the back," said Tufuga.

Tufuga said the experience for the young students was very insightful and showed them the significance of newspapers as a means of communication within the Samoan community.
