From hoops to crown: Miss USA Samoa

By Sialai Sarafina Sanerivi 29 August 2024, 1:00PM

Miss Samoa U.S.A. Josephina Fa'atupufilemu Lealaitafea is a 23-year-old with an inspiring mission to serve and uplift her community.

Better known as "Joey," she is breaking new ground as the first Miss Samoa U.S.A. representative to compete in the Miss Samoa pageant after a 15-year hiatus, making this journey both historic and deeply personal.

Joey’s participation in this year’s pageant marks her first-ever visit to Samoa, a momentous occasion that has evoked a profound emotional response. "This is a sacred moment for me," Joey confided to the Samoa Observer, reflecting on her long-held dream of visiting her ancestral homeland.

Her connection to Samoa runs deep, though her path to the Miss Samoa stage has been unorthodox.

Growing up, Joey never imagined herself as a pageant contestant. Instead, she embraced a tomboyish lifestyle, performing chores and serving others with a quiet strength. On top of that, she said she played basketball all her life.

Yet, this unexpected journey has opened her eyes to the significance of service, a core value in Samoan culture.

Joey is committed to harnessing her platform not only to serve her Samoan community in America but also to inspire and contribute to Pacific Island communities as a whole. She is particularly passionate about advancing healthcare and bridging culture and innovations.

Joey’s vision for healthcare reform is both innovative and practical. Collaborating with a healthcare company in America, she is spearheading a project designed to enhance healthcare delivery within communities.

Recognising the potential of technology to drive change, Joey is also inspired by projects like the one led by her mentor, Tofa Tavana, in Saipipi Savai'i. This initiative focuses on using technology to preserve coral reefs and promote tourism, illustrating how innovation can harmonise with cultural preservation.

In her own words, Joey acknowledges the current limitations in healthcare accessibility and is driven to integrate modern technology to bridge these gaps. "I know with healthcare here, it's not where it could be," she said. "Especially with how advanced technology is nowadays." Her dedication to improving healthcare outcomes reflects her broader commitment to service and innovation.

As she prepares for the pageant, Joey is fully aware of the expectations and pressures to bring the Miss Samoa crown back to the U.S.A.

Yet, her focus remains steadfast on representing her family, village, and community with integrity and authenticity. For Joey, success is not just about winning a title but about standing firm in her values and making a meaningful impact.

With her strong sense of purpose and innovative spirit, Joey is poised to inspire and lead, embodying the true essence of service and cultural connection.

She is contestant number 12 and will be speaking on the theme of this year's Miss Samoa pageant, "Alofa i lau Samoa Matalasi" during the pre-pageant interview.
