The Faleolo International Airport received a significant upgrade in its security infrastructure, thanks to a generous WST$4 million donation from the New Zealand Government.

The equipment handover, facilitated through New Zealand’s Official Development Assistance Program marks a major advancement in aviation security for Samoa and the wider Pacific region.

The ceremony held on Thursday at the airport was a notable event drawing the attention of key figures including New Zealand’s High Commissioner to Samoa, Si’alei Van Toor, cabinet ministers, the Speaker of the House, and top bureaucrats.

The occasion also recognised the dedicated efforts of those involved in installing the new security tools.

The event commenced with an opening prayer led by Reverend Gaolo Elisara from the Congregational Christian Church Samoa (C.C.C.S.) parish in Satapuala.

Reverend Elisara emphasised the importance of divine blessing and placing faith at the centre of human endeavours. He said without such guidance, efforts can be in vain.

The donation includes advanced security equipment to bolster the screening and detection capabilities at the airport. The new tools include five Explosive Detection Systems. These are crucial for identifying potential explosive threats within baggage and cargo.

The Dual View X-ray Systems systems enhance the ability to scan passenger baggage and cargo from two angles, providing a more comprehensive view and increasing detection accuracy.

A Computed Tomography (CT) Next-Generation 3D Imaging X-ray System. This high-tech system is specifically for Hold Baggage, offering detailed three-dimensional imaging to detect concealed threats.

Three Explosive Trace Detection Systems, an enhancement feature for aviation security screening used for examining passengers, and cargo, and adhering to additional security requirements for flights to Honolulu.

Three Walk-Through Metal Detectors are designed to enhance security screenings at passenger checkpoints.

The total value of the equipment is NZ$2 million.

Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa, serving as the Acting Minister for Aviation expressed profound gratitude.

Prime Minister Fiame also acknowledged the long-standing mutual respect and friendship between Samoa and New Zealand. She noted that this relationship was reaffirmed by the Statement of Partnership. This partnership outlines the vision, priorities, and principles for cooperation on various projects shared by the two nations.

In addition to the equipment donation, New Zealand has committed to providing service and maintenance support for the next three years, ensuring the continued operational efficiency of the new systems. This support is particularly timely as Samoa prepares to host the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting in less than three months.

The introduction of these advanced screening systems is expected to significantly enhance aviation security not only within Samoa but across the Pacific region. Niue and Kiribati have already benefited from similar upgrades, with Tonga and the Solomon Islands slated to receive their new systems shortly.

“This project represents a critical step forward in improving the security infrastructure at Faleolo International Airport,” noted Prime Minister Fiame. “The upgraded equipment will enable our frontline officers to effectively screen passengers, check luggage and cargo, and meet national and international security standards.”
