Over the weekend, the constituency of Gagaemauga No.1 in Savai'i achieved a historic milestone by launching its own radio station, marking the first time an electoral constituency in Samoa has undertaken such an initiative. 

The grand opening was a significant event, drawing a diverse crowd including government leaders, high-ranking officials, members of parliament, clergy, and local residents.

Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mata'afa graced the occasion as the guest speaker, representing the Samoan government extending her congratulations to the Gagaemauga No.1 community. In her address, Fiame praised the initiative, singling out the driving force behind the project, Tuala Iosefo Ponifasio—the Chairman of the Gagaemauga No.1 district council and Deputy Prime Minister. 

Fiame underscored the uniqueness of this initiative, noting that it was the first time a Samoan parliament member had spearheaded such a project for his district.

Fiame highlighted the critical role of this new radio station, "Siufofoga Gagaemauga No.1. 88.0 FM," in keeping the community informed about important developments and updates. 

She emphasised that an informed community is better positioned to take advantage of government incentives and understand the impact of decisions made by their leaders. Despite the rise of modern communication technologies, Fiame reaffirmed the enduring importance of radio as a vital channel for disseminating information, particularly during natural disasters and health crises.

The new station will serve as a platform for a range of purposes: from broadcasting educational programs and health messages to delivering spiritual content and entertainment. 

Additionally, Fiame pointed out that this project will offer valuable employment opportunities to local youth, providing them with training in radio operation and media reporting.

This launch not only represents a significant advancement in local media but also serves as a testament to community empowerment and innovation. Fiame commended all those involved in making this groundbreaking achievement possible, highlighting it as a notable moment in Samoa's history.
