Mr. Robinson visits Observer
The Australian High Commissioner to Samoa Will Robinson called on the Samoa Observer on Tuesday to mark his first visit to the publication’s office.
Matters discussed with the Samoa Observer Editorial Board included ways in which journalism in this country could be improved and how Australia could be of aid.
The Editorial Board highlighted the challenges faced in the current journalism landscape including the constant battle with fake news on social media.
Mr. Robinson highlighted Samoa was 21 points ahead of Australia in the Freedom of Press index.
One of the engagements the Australian government has embarked on with the Pacific nations is helping local media in terms of training and funding.
Mr. Robinson said there would be training for local media in Samoa ahead of the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting.
The Editorial Board thanked Mr. Robinson for the visit and gave their commitment to assist in the improvement of media and ensure the maintenance of the freedom of the press.
Mr. Robinson took over the diplomatic posting from Emily Luck earlier this year.
He said he looked forward to being in Samoa and has enjoyed his time here. He speaks four languages which are English, Spanish, German and Tagalog.
He said he was working on learning Samoan as well.
