Life of rugby legend Lolani Koko celebrated

The solemn service commemorating the life of Samoa's revered rugby icon, Misa Lolani Koko, took place on  Sunday in Tuaefu. 

The service was held by the Avele College Old Pupils Association.

Misa, a distinguished alum of Avele College, departed on 18 June at the age of 60, leaving behind a legacy etched in both union and rugby league on the international stage.

The solemn service commemorating the life of Samoa's revered rugby icon, Misa Lolani Koko, took place on a serene Sunday in Tuaefu. 

Renowned for his formidable blend of speed and strength, Misa who was better known as "Lolani" captivated fans with his prowess and leadership, deeply influenced by his cultural roots and Christian values. 

His career spanned from 1983 to 1994, during which he donned the blue jersey of Manu Samoa, showcasing his talent for Moata'a before moving to New Zealand in the early 1990s. 

In Wellington, his star shone bright, notably scoring 11 tries during the 1992 New Zealand N.P.C. season.

Despite an invitation to trial for the All Blacks, Misa remained steadfast in representing Samoa, excelling in both 15s and 7s formats. His crowning achievement came in 1993 when he was pivotal in Samoa's triumph at the Hong Kong 7s, earning the prestigious Man of Honour accolade.

Misa's journey transcended borders, as he also enriched the Boroondara Rugby Club in Australia before transitioning to rugby league in 1995. 

Joining the Sydney City Roosters in the Australian Rugby League, he brought his trademark flair to a new arena. He was a pivotal member of Western Samoa's squad during the 1995 World Cup, further cementing his status as a sporting luminary.

He was celebrated for his unwavering determination, fervent athleticism, and remarkable prowess on the field. 

A former educator at Avele College reminisced about his tenure when Lolani was part of the school's first XV team during 1982-83. 

Notably robust and formidable, he left a lasting impression as a challenging player to confront. His agility, strength, and finesse were unmatched, earning him a reputation that instilled fear in opponents. 

His contributions to Samoa and the college were exemplified through his exceptional talent and expertise.
