Village mayors and women representatives could be incorporated into district offices across Samoa as part of restructuring plans of the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development.

Minister Mulipola Anarosa Ale-Molio'o outlined these initiatives, emphasising collaboration between local leaders and government agencies to streamline community engagement and development efforts.

In response to inquiries from the Samoa Observer, Minister Mulipola assured that the restructuring efforts do not entail the abolishment of village mayors and women representatives.

Instead, they will be incorporated into the district offices responsible for executing the ministry's $1 million tala district development project.

"The objective is to bring village leaders and women representatives under the purview of district offices, facilitating easier access for community members to raise issues that require government attention," explained Mulipola.

She clarified that salaries for village mayors and women representatives will continue to be provided by the ministry and will not be drawn from the district grant.

"Village mayors and women representatives serve as crucial links between the government and our communities, representing local interests and concerns," Mulipola emphasised.

"With the establishment of district councils collaborating with the ministry and government, integrating these roles ensures a coordinated approach to addressing community needs and aspirations."

The move aims to strengthen local governance by enhancing communication channels and promoting effective community participation in government initiatives.

Mulipola highlighted that bringing village leaders and district offices together will foster a more responsive and inclusive governance framework, aligning grassroots input with national development goals.

As discussions progress, the Ministry of Women, Community and Social Development anticipates constructive engagement with stakeholders to refine and implement these restructuring plans effectively.
