A new tourist attraction has been unveiled at the Sopo’aga Falls Lookout as part of a collaboration between the Samoa Tourism Authority (STA), the Government of New Zealand, and the owner of the Sopoaga Falls site, Saua Vasati Lemalu.

New Zealand High Commissioner Sia’lei van Toor officially opened the site on Wednesday morning.

The lookout is located in the scenic village of Matatufu Lotofaga providin visitors with a captivating experience, and highlighting the natural beauty and rich cultural heritage of the region.

The Chief Executive Officer of Samoa Tourism Authority Toleafoa Pativaine Petaia-Tevita said the project was in the pipeline for a couple of years and its unveiling was a cause for celebration.

"We are now starting to roll out these projects that were in the pipeline for the past two years. But because of COVID, we've had to put everything on hold," said Toleafoa.

Toleafoa said the opening of tourist sites is beneficial for both the owners of the site and STA.

“So this is the government's contribution to these families and our communities,” said Toleafoa.

“It's the families who benefit directly from the admission fees and our promotions. They get more money,” added Toleafoa.

Looking ahead, the future holds promising prospects for STA, with plans for the next project at the Papapapatai Waterfalls in Tiavi already underway.

Saua Moilo Peni Vasati Lemalu, the 54-year-old site owner is enthusiastic about welcoming tourists and sharing the beauty of her land with the world.

The Sopo'aga Falls Lookout is located on Saua's 62-acre property allowing visitors to explore three acres of pristine natural beauty and engage in traditional activities, including guided tours and cultural demonstrations such as grating the coconut and preparing a traditional Samoan umu.

Saua is committed to providing an enriching experience, showcasing the authentic traditions and customs of Samoa.

Speaking about the project, Saua expressed her happiness and shared her aspirations.

"I was happy when the opportunity to create this lookout was presented to me. Not only will it help my family, but it will also be an attraction for people from overseas to come and witness the beauty of Samoa," she said.

The partnership between Saua and the Samoa Tourism Authority has been crucial to the establishment of the Sopo'aga Falls Lookout. The Government of New Zealand funded  WST$9,200 through the Samoa Tourism Recovery and Resilience Program (STRR) to support the materials for the National Beautification Committee workers of STA who built the project.

With an entry fee of $10 for people 10 years and above and $5 for under-10, the Sopo'aga Falls Lookout offers various activities for visitors.

The site attracted its first two tourists on Wednesday morning. Cullum Parker and Cushla Moscrip from New Zealand described their experience as "pretty special" and "exciting."

“Cullum loves waterfalls. So we're on a waterfall hunt. We’re just stopping at any cool little attraction to look at on the way -  especially that one (Sopoaga Falls), looks pretty amazing,” said Moscrip.

Saua is excited to welcome tourists to the Sopo’aga Falls Lookout. She wants to promote sustainable tourism and create a strong bond between visitors and the local community. With dedication and passion, Saua aims to bring in a new wave of tourism that showcases the beauty and hospitality of Samoa.

“We have a traditional Samoan cooking house on site where I can teach tourists the way Samoans cook and prepare our food,” said Saua.
