PM Fiame inspires Samoan author's book
A Samoan orator and author of a three-book series, Fata Ariu Levi finally presented his books to Prime Minister Fiame Naomi Mataafa whom he dedicated the whole series to for her profound leadership that inspired him to finish the last two books.
The first book is titled 'Navigators Quest for a Kingdom in Polynesia', the second is 'Founding a Christian Nation in Polynesia', and the third is 'Forging a Matriarchal Culture in Polynesian'.
The three-book series offers a complete history and culture of the Samoans and Manu'ans, chronicled in a new narrative, giving a new perspective on reality.
In an interview with the Samoa Observer, Fata highlighted that since the General Elections in 2021 when Fiame became the first female Prime Minister of Samoa, he found a new inspiration as he was halfway through his second book.
He then waited for three years to collect reviews from professional viewers as well as Samoan diasporas about his book before he surprised the Prime Minister with his series.
"I finished my first book and a year later I wrote my second one and halfway through my book, Fiame was running for Prime Minister and it captured my attention. I found love in her vision and perspective about the new country and I just thought, Wow," he said
"I wouldn't mind that if I could do this. I will dedicate the whole series to her. I dedicated the whole series to her and the last book, if you read the title, its 'forging a matriarchal culture in Polynesia'.
"It's the women who founded and forged the foundation of Samoa's culture not men and that's from the research I did and so my last book talks about the history of Samoa from 3000 BC until Independence.
"Fast forward, I waited for about three years before to present these books to the Prime Minister which she doesn't know about even though it's been published in America."
Fata's books were reviewed by professors in New Zealand as well as families and friends.
"That really is the objective of why I came to Samoa. I wanted that after three years, I waited to ensure that the reviews were decent and I didn't want to rush and then later on the reviews blew up. I knew it was a risk when I did it," he said.
"But I was emotionally touched by Fiame's mision, her message, her challenge, she basically challenged the country that it's time to look at a paradigm shift in the way we see how we construct the government in order for us to maximise the utility of how country and better protect the people of Samoa.
"That was a very clear message and to me it was a profound message and that's what touched me and that's what led me as an artist to do this."
He commutes often between the United States and Samoa to fulfill his obligations as a matai of Afega.
Fata was born in Vaimoso and attended Seventh-Day Adventist Primary School at Lalovaea and two weeks after Samoa celebrated its independence in 1962, he left Samoa for the United States. Fata grew up in the San Francisco Bay Area in California.
He served in the U.S. Army and was wounded during his tour in Vietnam.
He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Economics and a Bachelor of Science degree in Business Accounting from California State University in East Bay, Hayward, California.
He was previously the Vice President of Bank of America at the Corporation's headquarters in San Francisco, California.
Meanwhile, Fata also highlighted that writing his book in the English language caters to Samoan diasporas considering that there are enough writers in Samoa who can write in Samoa to cater for the Samoan readers in Samoa and overseas.
