When Jeff Aru Revo was named the Gold Medalist of the University of the South Pacific's Bachelor of Agriculture programme on Friday, he was overwhelmed with emotions.

The 25-year-old from Vanuatu had hoped his parents and family were present to witness his remarkable achievement. His accomplishments did not end with the gold medal. He was also honoured with the Telefoni Retzlaff Memorial Prize for the Top Animal Husbandry Student.

“I feel proud and honoured to have graduated in Samoa and to see how far I have come,” he said.

Revo admitted that his primary goal was to graduate, and he had not expected to receive the prestigious gold medal award.

Currently pursuing post-graduate studies, Revo expressed sadness that his parents could not be physically present to celebrate this milestone with him.

Watching other graduates embraced by their parents and loved ones intensified his longing for his family's presence. However, this did not diminish his sense of gratitude for what he had achieved.

"It's quite sad," he said.

"Because I looked at the other students who graduated today [Friday] and they were embraced by their parents and loved ones. It made me wish that my parents were here, even more."

Revo acknowledged the unwavering support and prayers from his parents and family back in Vanuatu, as well as the encouragement from his friends in Samoa and at home.

"I have learned a lot being away from home for studies," he said, emphasising the personal growth and educational gains he experienced during his time abroad.

Looking ahead, Revo is excited about returning to Vanuatu in November.

“I am excited to go back and use my skills and expertise to give back to my community,” he said, highlighting his commitment to contributing to the development and improvement of agricultural practices in his homeland.

Revo's story is one of perseverance, dedication, and gratitude.

Despite the challenges of being far from his family, he remained focused on his goals and achieved outstanding success. His journey serves as an inspiration to many, demonstrating that with hard work and support, one can overcome obstacles and achieve greatness.
