Ground worry for rugby league
The first round of the local rugby league competition did not start as scheduled last weekend after St. Joseph's College cancelled the use of its ground just days before.
Clubs are facing uncertainty as the recent cancellation left players and management are in the dark.
Letava Bulldogs captain Leiataualesā Eseroma Lewer from Vailima and Vaola, expressed how his team is uncertain about where the competition currently stands.
"We just don't know what's going on right now," said Leiataualesā.
According to Leiataualesā, the tournament was abruptly cancelled last week, leaving many players unaware of the reasons behind the decision. However, moving forward, the team continues to train in hopes of a confirmed venue.
"We'll just wait for them. Just wait for the call from the rugby league. But for now, we just train and do the same stuff with the boys," said Leiataualesā.
Due to cancellations, many teams have continued their training in hopes the competition will start this weekend.
"I've seen some other clubs, they've been training for like a month now. But my club, we just started training three weeks ago for this league comp," said Leiataualesā.
Leiataualesā said he was not surprised as this is not the first time something like this has happened. He said the teams just want to play and get on with it.
"We've got a lot of tours this year for the resident Toa Samoa and also, we have the Island of Origins going on. So, I don't know when this is going to start," added Leiataualesā.
The captain highlighted the need for better backup plans and organisation from the tournament organisers to avoid similar issues in the future.
According to other sources closely involved in the planning, the executives of Rugby League Samoa held a meeting on Wednesday night to confirm the availability for another field.
Apia is unavailable this weekend as a seven competition is being played. Church College in Pesega seems to be the likely venue if competition gets underway this weekend.
As the situation unfolds, the uncertainty surrounding field availability has impacted multiple clubs, including the Bulldogs.
This delay has left teams and players in limbo, eagerly awaiting confirmation on whether the competition will proceed as planned. With the executive meeting expected to provide clarity, all eyes are on the decision to determine the fate of this week's competition.
Rugby League Samoa has not commented on the matter.
